A Fiberglass Geogrid is a reinforcing geosynthetic material made from alkali-free glass fiber filaments as the core material. These filaments are woven into a mesh structure via warp knitting and are then coated with a modified asphalt or polymer compound. Its fundamental principle is to utilize the high tensile strength and low elongation properties of glass fiber. When embedded within asphalt pavement or soil layers, the geogrid interacts with the matrix through mechanical interlocking and friction. This mechanism distributes stress from loads, restricts the lateral movement of aggregates or soil particles, and thereby effectively enhances the overall performance, stability, and service life of the structural layer.

Performance

Fiberglass geogrid has the following properties

  • High Strength & Low Elongation: Glass fiber possesses extremely high tensile strength, over twice that of steel of equivalent cross-section. Simultaneously, its elongation at break is less than 4%, and it exhibits negligible creep under load, ensuring long-term, stable reinforcement.

  • Excellent Temperature Resistance: Fiberglass Geogrid has a wide service temperature range (-100°C to 280°C), maintaining stable performance without melting or deforming under the high temperatures of asphalt paving.

  • Effective Interlocking & Restraint: The unique mesh structure provides strong interlocking with asphalt aggregate or soil, effectively limiting the lateral movement of materials. This helps reduce rutting, reflective cracking, and settlement.

  • Corrosion & Aging Resistance: The glass fiber core is inert, resisting mildew, rot, and corrosion from acids, alkalis, and salt. The protective coating significantly enhances its resistance to environmental weathering and aging, ensuring a long service life.

  • Physicochemical Stability: Fiberglass Geogrid is compatible with asphalt mixtures, undergoes no harmful chemical reactions, and delivers reliable, consistent performance.

Application

Fiberglass geogrids are mainly used in the following areas:

  • Highways & Municipal Roads:

    • New Construction: Used for soft soil stabilization and subgrade reinforcement to improve bearing capacity.

    • Road Rehabilitation: Laid over existing pavements or base courses to effectively suppress and delay reflective cracking.

    • Asphalt Overlays: Reinforces overlay sections, reduces rutting, and extends pavement life.

  • Railway Systems: Reinforces railway embankments, prevents ballast penetration, and distributes dynamic load stresses.

  • Embankments & Slopes: Fiberglass Geogrid is used in reinforced soil retaining walls and slopes to enhance soil mass stability and prevent erosion and landslides.

  • Airfields, Ports, Freight Yards: Stabilizes soft ground and reinforces heavily loaded areas to prevent differential settlement.

  • Tunnels & Mining: Reinforces tunnel linings and haul roads in mining areas.
